Concept Design for The Abhorsen - The House

It's been a while, but that's because I was busy re-locating to Seattle, WA! Woohoo!

More work for my Abhorsen series! Credit to the wonderful writings of Garth Nix and 'The Old Kingdom Trilogy'. Truly awesome reads :D

and then some...

few more warm ups/sketches, getting back into thinking somewhat in color

the first is a Jaeger design, inspired by Pacific Rim and my wonderful sister. she's hard core like a war hammer wielding Jaeger. the second is Liz Sherman from the Hellboy and BPRD universe. she's the coolest.

the black dogs

in Celtic folklore, the Black Dogs appear as physical manifestations of the spirits of the dead or as portents of death. they’re basically a constant reminder of the grave.

SO. BAD. ASS.

Jack Frost's Forest (1979 Redesign)

The final project for my Sketching for Environment class was to redesign a space from the 1979 Rankin & Bass Jack Frost stop motion animation. I got Jack Frost's Forest, which is where he first meets Elisa, his love interest and main motivation throughout the film.

The villain of the film, Kubla Krauss, is said by the very poor and unfortunate townspeople to own everything in the land; down to the last brick and tree. His army and servants are all mechanical, coal burning robots he's manufactured. With that in mind, I thought this forest could have been partially destroyed and Jack Frost takes it upon himself to transform it into a beautiful place for the townspeople and children to visit during the harshest, most miserable time of the year.

fishin'

started as a sketch in my sketchbook, but then came across some great feedback on my work; they noted that i should try diversifying my color palette.

so i reproduced the sketch quickly in Photoshop and went in with colors i don't usually use, trying to make the mood bright and cheery. great exercise and a fun illustration!

*edit: here's the original sketch i based the above painting from; finally got around to scanning it, hahaha!
